Since we pay by the pound, the first question everyone asks is the same: how much does my LEGO actually weigh? The honest answer is that most people guess low. LEGO is denser than it looks — a container that seems half-full of "just some bricks" routinely surprises people at the scale. Here's how to get a solid estimate in under five minutes, with or without a scale.

Why Weight Matters

Knowing the approximate weight of your collection helps you plan your shipment. Our free shipping labels cover up to 50 lbs per box — if you have more, just request additional labels. A good estimate also means the payout number you see up front is close to the payment that actually lands in your account.

The Bathroom Scale Method

The easiest way to weigh LEGO uses a scale you already own:

1. 1Weigh yourself on a bathroom scale and note the number
2. 2Pick up your container of LEGO and step on the scale again
3. 3Subtract the first number from the second — that's your LEGO weight (minus a little for the container)

It's simple, surprisingly accurate, and works for containers far too big for a kitchen scale. For multiple bins, repeat and add the numbers up.

No Scale? Use Container Benchmarks

If a scale isn't handy, these real-world benchmarks get you close enough to plan your shipment:

• A gallon-sized zip bag of LEGO weighs roughly 2–3 lbs
• A standard shoebox holds about 3–5 lbs
• A 5-gallon bucket typically weighs 15–20 lbs when full
• A large storage tote (18-gallon) can hold 30–50 lbs

Tips for an Accurate Estimate

• Remove non-LEGO items like instruction booklets, packaging, or off-brand toys — these add weight but not payout
• Pull out Duplo — we don't currently accept it, so it shouldn't count toward your estimate
• Technic-heavy bins weigh more per volume thanks to beams, axles, and pins — round your guess up
• Don't worry about precision — your label works regardless; the final payout is based on our verified weight
